I had a South African box set from the 60's and every record had PVC off-gassing from the original sleeves. I used Scrubbing Bubbles bathroom tub and tile cleaner while protecting the labels with my Groovmaster device. Cleaned up all the records beautifully .

Hi Andrew Meguiars Plastic X is a great product for removing discolouration of plastic headlights but it is abrasive so great care should be taken when using it on Vinyl. Just a thought but one product you could use more safely is a good old British product from Auto Glym called “Fast Glass”. Not only is it good for glass but it’s recommended for all Perspex including cleaning vehicle infotainment screens etc so it may improve the PVC clouding on record vinyl. Cheers Phil Ross

Hi Andrew, I bought the deluxe edition. Unfortunately, the stylus jumps on the track Intuition on the picture disk of the ultimate mixes. Yours are no problem?

I would find another PVC-damaged record and experiment with it first. I bet the same record shop could easily find you a cheap record to try it on if you explain what you’re doing. They might even give you a free record to experiment with, as they would probably be interested in seeing the results. I would try the fix, then clean the record thoroughly afterwards… to prevent any damage that might occur with long term exposure to this compound. Perhaps a good soapy solution in the Spin Clean, then a second cleaning with a more standard cleaning solution. Followed by a clean rinse. Whatever you do, report back with your results! I have a couple of cloudy records I would love to repair if this method works.

Have you tried the Auto playlists in Foobar? I use them, and they are brilliant!!!

Does this only apply to black vinyl? Almost all picture disc's come in hard PVC sleeves (i.e. the recent Bloc Party The High Life EP, RSD), but due to the disc's colour it's almost impossible to see if it's happening.

I've tried Meguiar's on a few of my records that were damaged from PVC sleeves and it works to remove the clouding but unfortunately not the surface noise.

My covers are from a company Bags Unlimited that sell polyethylene album covers that they claim don't off gas or cause long term damage. Look at a few albums and they seem to be fine. No cloudiness.

It would be nice if someone made a video actually showing what these PVC sleeves look like so we could all avoid them. Some of the outer sleeves are obvious but the inner sleeves are harder to spot

No dont use it, it doesnt work and blocks your record cleaning machine all it does is shine it up, ive tried this method and it buggered them even more steer clear avoid like the plague its been debunked on other channels, I lost 15 to misting its a nightmare

Just to be clear, the problem you describe is caused by the OUTER sleeve that holds the cover, not the inner sleeve that holds the record, correct? I need to check mine! Is there an easy way to tell whether it contains PVC? Thanks. Love your channel.

Definitely try it on a less valuable record first.

I have a couple of albums that have suffered from years of being stored in PVC outer sleeves with the off-gassing from the plastic.

I know all about PVC sleeves and yet I still failed to remove the one on my copy. Luckily no sign of the dreaded irreversible clouding. Am now playing it to double check.

I asked this question once (below the PVC-dedicated video) but it wasn't answered. Let me ask it once again: do the PVC covers also affect the picture discs? The clouding may not be visible, but what about the audio?

After checking my record collection in the last year, I discovered about 20 PVC damaged records. I have now binned all PVC covers and replaced them with polythene ones. Everytime I buy an album at HMV in Manchester they try and sell me a new PVC sleeve. I tell them that they damage the records but they never listen.

Vinyl is crap i don't understand people buying a backwards format thank god for cd or streaming.

I removed all my PVC covers then, thankfully my Electric Arguments vinyl was not affected, but it’s definitely worth raising this issue with us vinyl collectors. Hi Andrew, thanks for mentioning this rather problematic issue. As my experience as a collector, this is not only the case with vinyl storage, but also CD storage. It urged me to switch to blake sleeves. I'll use that for books, comics, cds and vinyl records. The difference over the years is significant, so I would advise all of us, to get rid off pvc material. I managed to pick up a new copy off eBay about 3 years ago for a bargain price of £15. It did come in the hard pvc sleeve. I took it off after watching parlogram auctions video on this subject not long after. I kept it though (as it's part of the packaging - just like you keeping the hype stickers).

I'm pretty sure the collected series of vinyl using pvc will have to check as I have a marvin gaye and james brown collected vinyls so I need to check them thanks for the heads up Andrew..you would think the manufacturers of vinyl would know this and use the other type

Same applies to photographs, postcards etc. I have a mammoth postcard collection (yes maybe weird but I love them - all social documentary and pre-1950). The trouble and research I undertook to know how to store them. Fortunately, you can buy non-pvc, non-acidic sleeves - so you would put that over the card and then inserted than into a larger sturdy non pvc plastic hardcase. It might be also worth mentioning to keep your vinyl out of direct sunlight, but also damp areas and try not to have them remain static in storage for years. They need to breathe and have some airing now and then if you really want to take great care of them. Storing them hard against each other in a damp cold room is not good. I was reading andrewbrazier9664 comments below. Very interesting what he wrote and also informative. I think a lot of us are in that age group when we remember putting photos into those sticky albums with the celluloid type of plastic going over the top of each page. Wow it took the masses years to realise the harm this was causing. Remember trying to remove them from the albums and 50% collapsing as they were melding onto the page. Consequently, photographs as early as the 1910’s have lasted better than those in the 1970’s and 80’s. Prior to the 60’s most photographs were simply put in a cardboard matted page with corner holders that were made of paper. The future’s problems will be the excess of imagery as people using their phones take thousands of pointless shots. Others however contend that few people now bother to print out their photos on to a physical form so most images of the last twenty years will simply disappear as phones are regularly thrown on the tip site. To take this back to records I wonder what percentage over the decades were trashed due to lack of care, changes with cd technology etc. and the pvc issue. It would be interesting to know but is probably impossible to obtain data. Does anyone also remember those cheesy covers on those spiral photograph albums - they were so twee. Cheers.

Thanks for this. I bought a brand new copy from a record stall at a market in Scarborough a couple of years ago. The guy had a number of copies selling for £20!! Needless to say I was very happy with the price and he maybe didn't know what he had!!. I'll check my copy though as it came in the same packaging.✌️❤️😊

Glad you finally found McCartneys Fireman on vinyl, sorry that it’s slightly damaged. I got to be honest this is the first time I heard of PVC vinyl storage sleeves. I have my Lp’s in regular plastic album sleeves, so thanks for the info. As far as the cleaning application for the cloudiness maybe you want to hold off because you mentioned the music still sounds good & just some degrading sound between the tracks. Obviously you’re going to find out more about this cleaning chemical before using it, might be better leaving this Fireman vinyl rarity as is. Just my opinion.

I don't think you can polish that off. PVC and Vinyl are the same thing, PVC covers, however, have to be flexible and therefore contain plasticisers. The plasticisers evaporate over time. If there is not enough air around them to dilute them they affect the PVC that's close to them -- your record. They do the job they are meant for, that is, they try to soften the vinyl, and they can even penetrate cardboard and paper. The cloudiness is therefore a deterioration of the surface of the record and not a deposit that you should be able to wipe off. The ridges of the grooves are usually high enough that a shorter period of exposure to the plasticisers does not affect the sound in the grooves. But give it time (plus pressure like on a packed shelf plus temperature) and it will destroy the sound. I have a couple of 50+ years old singles that have been audibly damaged. And I notice that I left my Electric Arguments in their original sleeve, dear me, how stupid can you be. Got to check immediately ...

Hi Andrew, thanks for your advice, i went to check my copy of this album, and the first record is ok but the second one started to leave that cloud effect on the record, but just a little, i played it and there is no problem with the sound. But there is another issue this time with all the movies on dvd that we buy that are sold in thin dvd cases, these cases are made with pvc, i had to trow them in the garbage cause the surface was all ruined. All my James Bond movies was ruined.

Ok, mine has minor clouding but it doesn’t seem to have affected the sound. I’ve now taken it out of the sleeve. Thank you, you probably saved my Fireman album.

Hello Andrew, I bought the mono re-issue of the Pretty Things SF Sorrow when it was released in 2000 and it originally came in a bespoke PVC sleeve and for the best part of 20 years it has sat in the OG PVC sleeve and has not been affected by off-gassing. I like you, would not advocate keeping vinyl in PVC sleeves and take them out of them. But, I thought it was worth pointing out that this is not a linear affect and does not happen all the time. Also, I'm a life long scale model maker and use all sorts of products to get scale finishes on models, as such I'm aware of Plast-RX as it is good for polishing transparent parts to give them a scale crystal clear appearance. I would however, not let it close to any of my vinyl, as it has microscopic abrasives in suspension and I can only dread what it will do to a record - I would say it is worse than the 'dreaded' PVA glue method of cleaning records. I would proceed with utmost most caution, even though it probably will restore a nice shiny lustre to vinyl, but that is likely only to be cosmetic and at considerable detriment to the SQ. If you can put up with the record you have "as is" I would leave it. Good work as always. Brgds. Russell.

Electric arguments is a much better and more interesting album than McCartney 3, Egypt station and many others of recent times.. Youth who is on this with Paul produced the verve’s urban hymns!

Do not use that cleaner, it will do more damage. I put my copy in Japanese inners and it appears those have saved it. I will now replace those as they are showing wrinkles and remove the PVC outer sleeve. I think the label will peel so may attach that to a replacement polypropylene cover. BTW 'Memory Almost Full' also came with a PVC sleeve which is now removed. Thanks for alerting me to this. Both these records are quite pricey to replace. I removed most of my PVC covers some years ago but skipped these as it was original packaging. My best suggestion for cleaning is a vacuum cleaning machine or ultrasonic cleaner. Won't remove the cloudiness but maybe some of the audible hiss.

Funny enough, I mentioned T-Cut to Beatley Tone a while ago and he thought I was nuts :). It works on scratches. I’ve found it hit or miss with cloudy records. I play it afterwards with a cheap stylus to get more gunk out, but a washer might work if you have one. Practice on something cheap or you're not bothered about first.

I had an issue with those PVCs when I bought blue Notes music matters Records. Some of the records had that smudge cloud on it, and it was removed with warm distilled water, micro fiber cloth.

I've had that album for years. Hmmm.. I must have got the original, yes. It is a good album.

It’s not just outer sleeves. Some people are finding problems with some record company issued inner sleeves, too. This guy found a problem with his Led Zeppelin Mothership box set. Hi Andrew, I also managed to find a decent Vinyl of this too. It also came in that Stiff Sleeve. I immediately took that off and threw it. It's now in a Decent Sleeve. I was really surprised to find it too. Weren't even looking for it. Great Video too

Interesting video Andrew, thanks for the tip. Given it is quite a rare record it is a bit of a risk to try but as you say if you don't you may not play it much anyway so 🤷... probably worth the risk if you're careful!

I bought my vinyl copy in Moscow a couple years ago. Great quality.

I maybe the exception here but 95% of my vinyl is on pvc and no issues I’m aware of . I use polythene sleeves since I heard about the pvc issues. Maybe it’s only on certain pvc brands?

I got lucky with the album.. i bought it in Leiden-Holland at 3345vinyl a few months ago. And the records were stored secure in a plastic japanese inner sleeve within the original inner sleeve. So they were protected from gassing. 😃 And i know that they are still selling PVC plastic at some record stores where i live. And it sells. But you need the inner plastic within original inners. Or else..use anti static inners next to the original paper inner sleeves so the record is protected. Hope you get lucky next time.👌🏽

Had exactly the same with a first edition of The Beatles Something New. Can’t even file it near any other albums as the cover is so sticky! Nevertheless, a great buy. EA is up there with the beat of all the Macca albums!
